NORTHERN ELEGANCE: FINE EARLY CHINESE FURNITURE - October 2019
Exhibition: October 21st-31st

Altfield Gallery is pleased to present this Autumn an exhibition of a collection of fine antique Chinese furniture from the Northern provinces. These exquisite pieces draw upon aesthetic traditions which date back to a thousand years from the Song (960-1279), Yuan (1279-1368) and Ming dynasty (1368-1644). They are appreciated for both the archaic characteristics of the earlier dynasties, and for the simplicity and elegant lines of the Ming dynasty, both of which styles were retained through the 19th century. Many of the Northern provinces such as Shanxi, remained unaffected by the elaborate aesthetic which developed in the Qing court and the southern coastal regions.

Altfield has been a leading force in the promotion and opening up of the Chinese antique furniture market for over 30 years, and has seen many changes in the collecting market over those years. Currently, the market for fine antique furniture within China is very strong, and there is a great interest in these traditional forms. Originally created for the homes of "Scholar Gentlemen" and the very wealthy merchant class, good early pieces have become scarce and more difficult to find over the years. These pieces have a sculptural clarity that is quite modern in its purity and are extremely easy to integrate into contemporary homes.

Altfield collected many of these pieces twenty or more years ago and has kept them as reference examples for their unique forms and styles. We are delighted to showcase them now in both our Central Gallery in Prince's Building and our Aberdeen Annex showroom. This allows us to show some of the larger sized cabinets, tables and screens in our spacious high-ceiling warehouse annex. We look forward to seeing you at both locations and to the chance to display such a wonderful collection of the best antique furniture styles in the market today.
